Is Your Pension Invested Ethically?

Everyone has different social, moral and religious principles. When it comes to your pension, these principles do not need to be sacrificed.

Have you ever considered how your pension is invested? Most pensions we encounter on a day-to-day basis are not invested in line with any ethical investment principles at all.

Spending Investment funds that are ethical aim to invest in assets that meet an agreed set of principles. How these principles are met can be assessed in two distinct ways, either through positive screening or negative screening. Positive screening finds assets that score highly on environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. On the other hand, negative screening aims to exclude any investments that do not meet the required criteria, such as tobacco, gambling, animal testing or weapons. These screening processes are used to build a portfolio of assets that are all deemed to meet the ethical standards set out.

You may wish to avoid investing your money in tobacco companies or choose to invest in companies that promote renewable energy. Our financial advisers will be able to help you asses how your pension is currently invested and recommend any changes, ensuring your pension is in line with your beliefs and values.

There is a common misconception that ethical portfolios could generate lower returns. This is not necessarily true. Returns cannot be guaranteed with any investment, regardless of whether the funds are ethical or not. However, as the world is changing and issues like climate change are becoming more present in our daily lives, many ethical investment funds have outperformed the wider market.
